Blog #1
Hey Guys! The title of the book was what first caught my attention. The book i am reading is called "Game". This book is written by Barry Lyga, it is the 2nd one of three books in the "I Hunt Killers Trilogy". Its a really neat book cause he writes this book with many perspectives of the characters. So the hero and the villain's point of view is expressed. This book was a little scary at times but once i got to know the characters it changed my point of view. The main character of this book is Jasper Dent. Jasper is not your everyday teenager. He is a guy with a very dark past. His father, Billy Dent is the worlds most feared serial killer. Think about it, how would you feel growing up with a serial killer as your dad? The bedtime stories that Billy read to Jazz were more like how to kill someone, so it definitely messed with Jasper's head. The book begins with Jazz finding out that his father broke out of jail. Now that was the moment everything went wrong for Jazz. Since he was raised by a serial killer, Billy always expected Jazz to go into the family business and take off after him. But Jazz isn't like that, but throughout the book you can see how he is constantly worried that he might snap one day and turn out to be a killer just like his dad.
"People are real, Jazz told himself, repeating his mantra. People matter"(pg.25). All Jazz wants is to be a regular seventeen year old. But, his past keeps dragging him down. Its not easy being the son of a serial killer. Sometimes its better not to follow the footsteps but create your own. The past is what is behind us. I don't think a person's past really defines their future. We write our own destiny. But, there is always a chance. Just like the guy in the picture, we can choose the right way or the wrong way. Sometimes the path may not be clear to us but in the end it is our decision who we want to become.

The link above is an article about an inspirational story on how your past doesn't define you. I have felt that sometimes my past has had some influence on my life. But in the end it is how you see yourself. The past can be a stepping stone, or a thing to forget. What do you think, can a person hide or run away from their past? Or are you stuck with it forever?

Wow! This story sounds really creepy. Does Jazz have a mother? If so, what does she think about this so called 'family business.' Are Jazz and his father on the run or do they not have to be because Billy is just a master at not getting caught? Do they live in the city or in a small town? If they live in a small town does this eventually lead up to Jazz moving away from his father and living in the city?
ReplyDeleteThanks! Yes, Jazz had a mother. But the book begins with Jazz "burying his mother". There wasn't a body at the funeral because his mom had disappeared more than 9 years ago. When he was 8, and he hasn't heard from her since. "The courts had declared her dead after the requisite 7 year waiting period (pg.11)". The story also talks about Jazz looking at family pictures where its him, his dad and his mom. But his mom was frowning in each picture. She was never happy living with his father because she knew what was going on and could do nothing about it. Jazz is not on the run, but his father is on the run. In fact he goes to NYC with a FBI agent to target down where his father could be hiding. In the beginning of the novel, the story takes place in a small town of Lobo's nod. But as Jazz finds out his father, the serial killer is on the loose. He goes to New York City to figure out the mysteries. I hope that was helpful :)
DeleteThis book sounds really good, do you know what the first book is called and what it's about because I'm definitely interested in reading it. Also, I totally agree with you about how Jazz should write his own destiny and I feel that is true for everyone. You should do what you want to do, just because your parents did something in the past and want you to continue the tradition, that shouldn't make you do that. Don't let people write your own destiny, write your own because that's the only way you'll be happy in life.
ReplyDeleteThank you, I thought the book was quite interesting! The 1st book is called "I hunt killers". The 2nd one, which i did the blog on is called "Game". And the 3rd book from the series is called "Blood of my blood". If you ever do read it let me know how it goes. Yeah i definitely get what you said about destiny and how it has alot to do with your happiness. You should control your own happiness, not someone else (:
